Frequently asked questions
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. Of course, feel free to contact us about anything specific – we’re here to help.
Getting started
We review your sites, assets and goals, provide topline recommendations on sensor types, connectivity options (wired,cellular/LoRaWAN/satellite) and some thoughts on potential benefits.
We work with organisations of all sizes. Whether you need to monitor a single parameter at one site or require comprehensive monitoring across multiple locations and assets, we design bespoke solutions tailored to your specific needs and scale
skentel has specialised in remote monitoring solutions since 2009. We evolved from our origins 25 years ago in electrical automation and BMS control panel manufacture, which gave us the technical foundation to focus on helping organisations eliminate routine site visits and gain real-time asset visibility.
We primarily serve leisure & hospitality, agriculture & environment, energy & facilities management, and decision makers leading sustainability initiatives. However, our solutions apply to any operation with dispersed assets requiring remote visibility.
While we’re based in Cornwall, we work with clients across the UK and internationally. We operate large LoRaWAN networks across many sites across the UK as well as many cellular 4G solutions and from late 2025 we introduced low power sensor to satellite solutions across Europe.
If you manage dispersed or remote assets that require routine site visits, if you lack continuous visibility or understanding of your energy/water usage, or if you need better data for sustainability reporting, remote monitoring can help. We offer a free assessment to determine if our solutions fit your needs.
We specialise in remote and hard-to-reach assets. Our 16 years of remote monitoring experience, combined with our consultative approach and fully managed service model, means you get connectivity solutions that work, without needing to become technical experts yourself.
Solutions and managed service
As part of our fully managed service, we handle all maintenance, updates, and technical support. We proactively monitor system performance and can often detect and resolve issues remotely before they impact your operations. If hardware needs replacing, we manage that process for you.
We can often integrate with existing BMS systems, sensors, and SCADA platforms. We assess what you have during the initial consultation and design solutions that enhance rather than replace your current setup where possible. Our platform supports API and webhook capabilities for system integration.
No. That’s exactly what we handle for you. We design user-friendly dashboards, provide training for your team, and manage all the technical complexity, including hardware, connectivity, and platform maintenance. You focus on using the insights and running your operations, not managing technology.
Real-time data from your connected assets tailored to your goals; instant alerts for system abnormalities; historical trends and analytics; some predictive insights to forecast potential issues; and automated reports for stakeholders, all accessible from any device, anywhere.
Yes. Our solutions are designed to scale. Whether you’re adding one sensor or expanding to new locations, we can integrate additional monitoring points into your existing dashboard.
We don’t just install and disappear. We continuously monitor system performance, hold regular reviews to ensure it’s meeting your goals, provide progress reports, and evolve the solution as your needs change or you grow.
Everything from initial assessment through ongoing optimisation. This includes design and installation of hardware, the best connectivity solution for your needs and scale (wired/cellular/LoRaWAN /satellite), access to customised dashboards on a central cloud platform, on going monitoring, maintenance, updates, and technical support. You get insights and control; we handle all the technical complexity.
Technology and connectivity
No. That is one of the key problems we solve. Our connectivity solutions, particularly LoRaWAN and satellite, are specifically designed for sites without existing internet infrastructure. The sensors transmit data wirelessly to gateways or satellites, which then relay information to your cloud-based dashboard. You only need internet access on the device you use to view your dashboard (computer, tablet, or phone).
We have extensive experience installing sensors to monitor a wide range of parameters across diverse environments. These include: temperature, humidity, energy usage, water usage, water quality, water levels, CO2, ground source heat pump performance, heating and cooling systems, borehole depth environmental conditions (eg wind speed), livestock health, and more.
We’re always open to discussing your specific requirements and thrive on developing tailored technical solutions for clients.
Yes. We use end-to-end encryption protocols and GDPR-compliant data handling. The Datacake platform we use features European hosting to ensure GDPR compliance and data security. You retain full ownership and control of your data, with access controls and audit trails to demonstrate good governance.
Yes. We specialise in integration with BMS systems (BACnet & Modbus), SCADA platforms, existing sensors, and other monitoring equipment. Through the platform’s API and webhook capabilities, we can enable automated workflows and data exchange with other business systems where needed. Our solutions are designed to enhance what you already have.
We are experts in using LoRaWAN (long-range wireless networks) or satellite connectivity specifically for areas beyond cellular coverage. Through our partnerships with EchoStar Mobile and Myriota, we provide innovative low power satellite connectivity across Europe and beyond, keeping your assets monitored even in the most remote locations.
We build backup connectivity into solutions, working with specialised partners. Through our partnership with Pelion, we use multi-network SIMs that seamlessly connect to multiple UK networks, automatically selecting the best signal to keep your assets connected even in rural areas or during outages. With EchoStar Mobile and Myriota, our satellite connectivity keeps assets connected when terrestrial networks are not available. We have been solving complex connectivity challenges since 2009.
It depends on your environment and requirements. Cellular works well for urban/suburban locations with good mobile coverage, ideal for monitoring fewer assets where speed matters. LoRaWAN is best for monitoring many assets across dispersed locations without cellular coverage, making it cost-efficient for agriculture, environmental monitoring and rural sites. Satellite is essential for truly remote locations beyond terrestrial network reach. We assess your specific sites and recommend the best solution for you.
Business Case
We grow with you. As you add sites, change operations, or shift priorities, we adapt your monitoring solution accordingly without requiring you to manage the technical changes. We add devices as you grow and evolve the solution as your needs change.
Yes. Continuous data reveals usage patterns and inefficiencies that manual checks miss. For example, monitoring by asset and location uncovers specific drivers of consumption, enabling targeted optimisation. Our dashboards can compare usage across different times, locations, or operational stages, making waste and inefficiency visible.
Continuous monitoring by asset and location reveals usage patterns and performance issues that aren’t visible with occasional manual checks. Historical data dashboards help you spot patterns and trends over time. We can set automated alerts linked to specific thresholds, and our regular reviews help you interpret the data and identify optimisation opportunities. The comprehensive, continuous data enables evidence-based decisions on resource allocation, investments, and priorities.
No. We provide a fixed quote for our products and services with no unexpected costs. This includes hardware, connectivity, platform access, maintenance, and support
The payback period will vary by client based on a combination of factors. However, you are guaranteed to get payback for your investment through reduced travel costs and / or eliminated routine site visits, energy and water savings, and improved operational efficiency.
Sustainability and Net Zero
Continuous monitoring and automated reporting simplify environmental compliance. For instance, for agriculture and environmental projects, our systems track conditions such as water levels and quality, environmental conditions, and livestock health with consistent, reliable data. This automated tracking provides the audit trails and evidence needed to demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability certifications.
While we are still in the early stages of this journey, we are focused on extending hardware lifecycles and reducing waste. Our core, fully managed service model, where we retain ownership of equipment, enables us to begin our circular economy journey. This approach means equipment can be refurbished, redeployed, or properly recycled rather than being discarded by clients when it reaches end-of-life.
Remote monitoring reduces your carbon footprint in several ways. First, eliminating routine site visits directly cuts vehicle emissions. Second, continuous visibility into energy and water usage helps identify inefficiencies and optimise consumption. Third, predictive maintenance prevents waste and extends equipment lifecycles. Our clients use the data to demonstrate measurable reductions in emissions and resource consumption as part of their Net Zero strategies.
Yes. Our platform generates automated reports on the metrics you’re monitoring, such as energy savings, carbon reductions, water conservation. We configure these reports during setup based on your needs and requirements, giving you clear evidence of progress to share with stakeholders and demonstrate ESG compliance.
Our solutions contribute in multiple ways: eliminated vehicle emissions from site visits to do manual checks, optimised energy/water consumption through data-driven insights, reduced waste through predictive maintenance, and comprehensive, sustainability reporting to demonstrate progress toward ESG and Net Zero targets.
